/ Music Department

Studies in folk music allow us to enter into and explore the soundscape of history.

The folk music area is a new and emerging part of the music curriculum at Hope College. We believe that musicians need to immerse themselves in the historical context of our American folk music; therefore, we offer a range of ensembles and private instruction to shape students’ ability to create and understand music from our roots.

We offer study in:

  • Banjo
  • Mandolin
  • Folk guitar
  • Upright bass
  • Voice

Hope College is one of a very small number of schools in the nation which allows students to take private instruction in both mandolin and banjo. Lessons are available to all students, regardless of experience level. Find out more in the course catalog.

In addition to private studies, all of our students participate in small ensembles that perform Celtic music, bluegrass and the music of the great American singer-songwriters.
