About Us

The MISSION of CASA is to provide underrepresented children with the tools they need to succeed in elementary school. Specifically, we offer:
  • One-on-one, after-school tutoring
  • Small class summer school sessions
  • Free transportation for students to and from CASA programs
  • Updated educational materials
  • Frequent school and home communications
  • Active monitoring and assessment of student performance
  • Additional educational and cultural enrichment activities

Our METHODS are based on the belief that consistent, individualized attention produces the best results when teaching kids who struggle in school. That’s why:

  • CASA gets referrals from students’ school teachers – the individuals who best know these kids’ educational status – to identify the children who need additional help
  • CASA tutors work one-on-one with students
  • Each CASA student gets to work with the same volunteer tutor each week
  • CASA has more than 300 volunteers each year including a committed group of 160 tutors
  • CASA summer school is taught in small groups of 15 to 17 students with certified teachers and qualified teaching assistants in each class

Our HISTORY now dates back more than 30 years. CASA was started in 1987 by Holland community members who were concerned that many area minority children where falling behind and needed extra academic support at the elementary level. The first program session was held for 45 children in grades 1-8 at First United Methodist Church in Holland. In 1989, CASA became an outreach program of Hope College. At that time our program sessions and administration moved to the Hope campus where they remain today.

"CASA is a fun place to go after school. I like it because they help me with a lot of my homework. "
