AREAS OF Exertise

Shana considers herself a “generalist.” In her role as an instructor in introductory courses, she specializes in knowing "a little" about a wide range of biology topics. If Shana were able to research, she would choose to study the human microbiome, as it fascinates her.

Originally, Shana was trained as an organic chemist in the environmental laboratory business. Through this career, she honed her lab skills; she enjoys working in the lab with hands-on materials and learning.

Professional Experience

Shana’s experience with science education as a high school biology teacher, which she enjoyed very much. She excelled in this environment and loved the constant challenge and ever-changing environment of education.

Shana also has counseling experience. She completed a M.Ed. in school counseling and a practicum that allowed her to help students of all ages be academically successful or to navigate through a difficult time. This rewarding experience helped her develop compassion and empathy.

Outside the College

Shana’s favorite activity is camping, especially along the Lake Michigan shoreline. She loves Michigan! On a weekly basis she enjoys trail running, mountain biking (off-road riding), road cycling, weight training and hiking (or any combination). She is happiest when she can get outside and work out. She also likes everything about science; reading it, watching it, experiencing it, doing it… she especially likes to share her love of science and nature with others. Shana also loves playing board games with anyone who will join her.

While she was teaching high school, Shana also became involved in Science Olympiad. She has been a coach and mentor and is currently the program coordinator for her local school district, Thornapple Kellogg. She has now been active in Science Olympiad for 13 years. She likes the program’s team activities with an academic focus.

Shana has been happily married for 22 years and counting. She and her husband, Todd, a high school social sciences teacher have two daughters: Morgan (14) and Madeline (12). Both her girls are in the band and both take music lessons. Morgan plays percussion in her school band and the ukulele, and took four years of piano lessons.
