Diane Penning is a coloratura soprano who has appeared in concert nationwide in opera, oratorio and pops with orchestras including the Arkansas, Colorado Springs, Elgin, Grand Rapids, Holland and Grant Park music festivals; the Interlochen Arts Academy, the Kalamazoo, Mobile, Ocean City Pops, Pensacola, Phoenix, Greensboro, Las Cruces and Dayton Philharmonic symphonies and many others.  

Opera roles include:

  • Adele in Die Fledermaus
  • Frasquita in Carmen
  • Musetta in La Bohéme
  • Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana
  • Pamina, Papagena and Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute
  • Donna Anna in Don Giovanni

Oratorios with organizations such as the Apollo Chorus in Chicago's Orchestra Hall and the Kalamazoo Bach Festival include:

  • David Fanshaw’s African Sanctus
  • Bach’s Bm Mass and Christmas Oratorio
  • Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
  • Fauré’s Requiem
  • Handel’s Messiah
  • Haydn’s Creation

  • Orff’s Carmina Burana

Musical theatre credits include:

  • Cunegonde in Candide
  • Marian in The Music Man
  • Amalia in She Loves Me
  • Maria in a concert version of West Side Story
  • “The grouch” in  Kapilow’s Green Eggs & Ham, which she will repeat with the Grand Rapids Symphony for the 7th time in March 2018

In addition Ms. Penning has toured the U.K. and performs in concert with the Hildegard Singers, a three-woman group dedicated to early music.

Diane holds degrees in music and voice from the University of Michigan (B.M.) and Western Michigan University (M.M. in voice performance).
