The Hope College women's cross country team has
advanced to NCAA Division III national championships for the
second consecutive year.
The Flying Dutch finished second at the Great Lakes Regional
last Saturday behind MIAA rival Calvin.
The national meet will be hosted by Dickinson College of
Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday.
Coach Mark Northuis' Flying Dutch finished 17th at the 1997
nationals; their best finish was fourth in 1993.
Hope squad members include Cynthia Bannink, a senior from
Holland, Mich. (Holland Christian HS); Andrea Egeler, a sophomore
from Fruitport, Mich. (Fruitport HS); Jennifer Ernst, a sophomore
from Westerville, Ohio (Westerville HS); Jaimie Passchier, a
sophomore Rockford, Mich. (Rockford HS); Nicole Reynolds, a
sophomore from Mattawan, Mich. (Mattawan HS); Ellen Schultz, a
senior from Glen Lake, Mich. (Maple City-Glen Lake HS); and
Rebecca Timmer, senior from Pella, Ia, (Pella HS)
Schultz and Timmer achieved All-America status a year ago as
they finished 25th and 29th respectively at the national meet.
Schultz, a GTE Academic All-American who is making her third trip
to the championships, also competed at nationals in outdoor track
last spring in the 5,000 (12th place) and 10,000 (19th place).
