MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the second year in-a-row Olivet edged the Flying Dutchmen, this time by a mere nine points. Olivet ended with 536 points followed by Hope 527.5, Kalamazoo 363.5, Calvin 300.5, Albion 176 and Alma 83. The point difference in the diving events between Olivet and Hope was a dramatic 97-0 in favor of the Comets.
Third Day
° Freshmen James Richardson (Mt. Vernon, Ohio/Mt. Vernon HS) and Matt Ray (Holland/Holland HS) finished fourth (16:50.90) and sixth respectively (16:58.70) in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Paul Krone of Albion defended his championship (16:05.34).
° The Flying Dutchmen scored 45 points in the 200-yard backstroke, placing three in the championship finals and two in the consolation finals. Freshman Phil Heyboer (Zeeland/Holland Christian HS) led the Hope contingent with a second place finish. His time (1:52.11) was a season best of NCAA qualifying performance. Freshman Mitch Ruch (Zeeland/Zeeland West HS) finished fourth (1:57.18) and senior Andre Bravo (Chelsea/Chelsea HS) was fourth (1:57.18).
° Freshman Matt Rose of Grandville (Grandville HS) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time (:46.49) while sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) was sixth (:47.02). Junior Chas VanderBroek of Holland (Holland HS) won the consolation heat (:47.35).
° Freshman Brandon King of Willowbrook, Ill. (Hinsdale Central HS) finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.09).
° Freshman Ryan Nelis of Holland (West Ottawa) was second in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time (1:55.56).
° The Flying Dutchmen had a season-best time (3:04.76) in winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of junior Chas VanderBroek of Holland (Holland HS), sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS), senior Jake Holton of Chelsea (Chelsea HS), and freshman Matt Rose of Grandville (Grandville HS) also had a NCAA conditional qualifying performance.
Second Day
° Freshman Phil Heyboer of Zeeland (Holland Christian HS) captured Hope's first individual gold medal of the meet winning the 400-yard individual medley with a NCAA conditional qualifying performance and season-best time of 4:04.53. Heyboer competed in back-to-back events, leading off the night's first event (200-yard medley relay) and then competing in the 400 IM. Heyboer beat defending champion Yury Bylina of Olivet by more than five seconds. He is the first Hope swimmer to win the 400 IM since 1995. Junior Wade Engers of Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS) finished fourth (4:18.11) while senior Jeff Holtman of Rochester Hills (Rochester HS) won the consolation finals (4:19.36).
° Yet another freshman brought gold medal glory to Hope when Ryan Nelis of Holland (West Ottawa HS) won the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying performance (:50.66). Senior Kyle Waterstone of Holland (Holland HS) finished fifth (:52.32).
° The Flying Dutchmen finished third in the 200-yard medley relay. The relay of freshman Phil Heyboer of Zeeland (Holland Christian HS), freshman Brandon King of Willowbrook, Ill. (Hinsdale Central HS), freshman Ryan Nelis of Holland (West Ottawa HS) and sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) had a season-best time of 1:34.78. It was also a NCAA conditional qualifying performance. Kalamazoo won the event with a MIAA record time of 1:32.75 while Olivet was second (1:34.39).
° Junior Chas VanderBroek of Holland (Holland HS) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time (1:42.23) and provisional NCAA qualifying performance. Freshman Matt Rose of Grandville (Grandville HS) finished sixth while sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) won the consolation championships (1:45.30).
° Freshman Brandon King of Willowbrook, Ill. (Hinsdale Central HS) finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time (:59.84).
° Hope swimmers finished second and third in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Kyle Waterstone of Holland (Holland HS) captured the silver medal (:53.55) while freshman Mitch Ruch of Zeeland (Zeeland West HS) was third (:53.64). Freshman Paul Ellis of Kalamazoo won the event with a league-record time (:50.72).
° The Flying Dutchmen concluded Friday's competition by winning the 800-yard freestyle relay for the second year in-a-row. The team of junior Chas VanderBroek of Holland (Holland HS), freshman Phil Heyboer of Zeeland (Holland Christian HS), freshman Ryan Nelis of Holland (West Ottawa HS), and freshman Matt Rose of Grandville (Grandville HS) had a season-best time (6:54.95) and NCAA provisional qualifying performance.
First Day
° The Flying Dutchmen won the 200-yard freestyle relay for the 19th consecutive year. Relay members were sophomore Stephen Kurti of Battle Creek (Lakeview HS), freshman Matt Rose of Grandville (Grandville HS), sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) and senior Jake Holton of Chelsea (Chelsea HS). The season-best time of 1:23.66 was a NCAA conditional qualifying performance.
° Freshman Phil Heyboer of Zeeland (Holland Christian HS) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle. Defending champion Paul Krone of Albion repeated with a league-record time of 4:31.83. Heyboer was timed in 4:40.22, a season-best.
° Hope advanced six swimmers in the championship and consolation finals of the 200-yard individual medley. Robert Dekker of Kalamazoo successfully defended his championship in 1:53.74. Hope freshman Ryan Nelis of Holland (West Ottawa HS) finished second with a season-best time of 1:54.59. His time was a NCAA conditional qualifying performance. Other Hope finishers: senior Kyle Waterstone of Holland (Holland HS), third place, 1:55.47; junior Wade Engers of Ann Arbor (Pioneer HS), sixth place, 1:59.22); freshman Brandon King of Willowbrook, Ill. (Hinsdale Central HS), seventh place, 1:59.62); freshman Brian Collins of Warren, Pa. (Warren HS), ninth place, 2:00.51; and senior Karl Hoesch of Zeeland (Zeeland HS), 10th place, 2:02.40).
° The Flying Dutchmen placed three swimmers in the championship finals of the 50-yard freestyle Sophomore Ryan Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) finished second with a season-best time (:21.28) behind winner Andrew Resseguie of Calvin (:21.04). Hope teammates Jake Holton and Matt Rose tied for fifth place (:21.47). Hope had two in the consolation finals - junior Chas VanderBroek of Holland (Holland HS), eighth place, :21.54 and Stephen Kuerti, 11th place, :21.69.
° An all-freshman lineup finished second in the 400-yard medley relay. The relay of Phil Heyboer, Brandon King, Ryan Nelis and Matt Rose had a season-best time of 3:27.33. Kalamazoo won the relay in 3:24.68.
WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS
Calvin won its third straight championship totaling 675.5 points followed by Hope 493.5, Kalamazoo 290, Olivet 254, Albion 202, Saint Mary's 133, and Alma 83.
Third Day
° The Flying Dutch captured the top three places in the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Sarah Diekevers of Jenison (Jenison HS) successfuly defended her crown with a season-best time (2:08.50) and NCAA conditional qualifying performance. She earlier won the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore teammates Brittaney Reest (Holland/West Ottawa HS) and Meghan DeWees (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay HS) finished second (2:10.80) and third (2:11.11) respectively.
° Sophomore Andrea Keller of Kokomo, Ind. (Western HS) finished second in the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle with a season-best time (18:00.89). The 1,650 was won by Melissa Gerberth of Saint Mary's in 17:51.31.
° Sophomore Laura Ansilio of Western Springs, Ill. (Lyons Township HS) and freshman Christina Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) finished fourth (:53.28) and sixth (:53.41) respectively in the 100-yard freestyle. Calvin senior Becky Weima won the event a fourth consecutive year.
° Freshman Claire Piester of Columbia, Mo. (Hickman HS) finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time (2:26.99) and NCAA conditional qualifying performance.
° Senior Lisa Smith's bid to win the 200-yard butterfly for the third time in her career was thwarted by Kalamazoo sophomore Katie Stefl who won the event is 2:07.73 while Smith was clocked in 2:08.78. Teammates Jennifer Carr, a senior from Novi (Northville HS), and sophomore Sarah Johnson of Delaware, Ohio (Hayes HS) were third (2:13.59) and fourth (2:15.75) respectively.
° The Flying Dutch 400-yard freestyle relay team missed by a tenth of a second of gaining an automatic qualifying spot at next month's NCAA championships. Calvin won the relay in a league record 3:29.12 while Hope followed at 3:30.97. The NCAA automatic qualifying time is 3:30.87. Members of the relay were sophomore Laura Ansilio of Western Springs, Ill. (Lyons Township HS), freshman Christina Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS), junior Trisha Meier of Cedar Park, Tex. (Naperville, Ill. North HS) and senior Lisa Smith of Dearborn (Dearborn HS).
Second Day
° Senior All-American Lisa Smith of Dearborn (Dearborn HS) successfully defended her league championship in the 100-yard butterfly. Her winning time (:56.71) was an automatic qualifying performance for the NCAA Division III championships where a year ago she finished third. Senior teammate Jennifer Carr of Novi (Northville HS) finished second (:59.37) while freshman Kate Williams of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton Warrenville HS) won the consolation championship (1:00.78).
° Hope finished one-two in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Sarah Diekevers of Jenison (Jenison HS) captured the gold medal while sophomore Brittaney Reest of Holland (West Ottawa HS) won the silver in a race decided by 0.13 of a second. Diekevers was timed in :59.31 while Reest followed at :59.44. Both times were NCAA conditional qualifying performances. Sophomore Meghan DeWees of Bay Village, Ohio (Bay HS) won the consolation finals (1:01.37).
° The Flying Dutch finished second in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Brittaney Reest of Holland (West Ottawa HS), freshman Claire Piester of Columbia, Mo. (Hickman HS), freshman Kate Williams of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton-Warrenville HS), and senior Jennifer Carr of Novi (Northville HS) had a season-best time of 1:49.11. It was also a NCAA conditional qualifying performance. Calvin won the event with a league record time of 1:48.64.
° Sophomore Sarah Johnson of Delaware, Ohio (Hayes HS) finished sixth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:52.56). Sophomore Andrea Keller of Kokomo, Ind. Western HS) won the consolation finals (4:52.27). The winning time (4:32.11) of Kalamazoo sophomore Ketie Stefl took more than five seconds off the previous league record.
° Hope placed three swimmers in the championship finals of the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Laura Ansilio of Western Springs, Ill. (Lyons Township HS) finished third with a NCAA provisional qualifying time (:1:54.84). Freshman Christina Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) finished fourth (1:57.47) while junior Trisha Meier of Cedar Park, Tex. (Naperville, Ill. North HS) was sixth (1:57.80). Calvin senior Becky Weima won the event for a fourth consecutive year.
° Hope's only points in the 100-yard breaststroke came from a fifth place finish (1:08.94) by freshman Claire Piester of Columbia, Mo. (Hickman HS).

Calvin won the event with a league record time of 7:40.66.

(D'Evelyn HS), and senior Jennifer Carr of Novi (Northville HS).
° Sophomore Andrea Keller of Kokomo, Ind. (Western HS) finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 5:14.03.
° Senior Sarah Diekevers of Jenison (Jenison HS) finished second in the 200 IM (2:11.90) while teammate Claire Piester of Columbia, Mo. (Hickman HS) was fourth (2:13.57). The event was won in league-record time (2:08.93) by Alex Wilson of Calvin.
° The Flying Dutch placed three swimmers in the championship finals of the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Lisa Smith, the defending league champion, finished third in :24.49 while teammates Laura Ansilio and senior Jennifer Carr of Novi (Northville HS) tied for fourth place (:24.60). Calvin freshman Katie White won the event (:23.86).
° The Flying Dutch finished second in the 400-yard medley relay. The relay of sophomore Brittaney Reest of Holland (West Ottawa HS), freshman Claire Piester, senior Lisa Smith and freshman Christa Vogelzang of Holland (Holland Christian HS) had a season-best time (3:57.10) and NCAA conditional qualifying performance. Calvin won the relay in 3:56.58.
