The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will present four addresses during the 2008-09 school year.

The series, which will feature a variety of topics, is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Shoreline Orthopaedics, Holland Hospital, Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan and the college.

All four lectures will begin at 7 p.m., and will be presented at the college's Maas Center.  Admission is free.

The series will open on Tuesday, Nov. 4, with "Best Practices in the Pre-Participation Physical Examination of the Athlete" by Dr. Douglas Gregory of Lakeview Medical Center of Suffolk, Va.

The second address, "The Biomechanics of Hamstring Injury: Implications for Prevention and Rehabilitation," will be presented on Monday, Dec. 1, by Dr. Darryl Thelen of the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

The series will continue during the spring semester beginning on Monday, Jan. 12, with the address "'Wii-Hab': Video Games in the Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries" by Darryl Conway, an athletic trainer at the University of Maryland at College Park.

The 2008-09 series will conclude on Monday, April 13, with the address "Doing the Right Thing: Ethical Practice in Athletic Training" by Dr. Gretchen Schlabach of Northern Illinois University at DeKalb.

The Maas Center is located at 264 Columbia Ave., on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street in Holland.
