Final MIAA Players of Week are from Hope
The final MIAA basketball players of the week are from Hope's NCAA-bound teams -- Carrie Snikkers and Peter Bunn.

° Carrie Snikkers, a junior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), scored 43 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in three games last week in leading the Flying Dutch to their fifth straight MIAA Tournament championship. She had 15 points and eight rebounds in just 17 minutes of action in a 76-52 win over Alma, added 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 66-54 semifinal defeat of Adrian, and then scored 12 points in the championship game as Hope defeated Calvin, 68-49. For the week, Snikkers made 17 of 36 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and sixth time in her career.

° Peter Bunn, a junior from Lansing (Lansing Christian HS), scored 63 points in three games last week as the Flying Dutchmen won the MIAA Tournament and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. In the championship game against Calvin Saturday, he scored 24 points, including six free throws and a crucial steal in the final 48 seconds, as Hope rallied to defeat the Knights, 78-74. Earlier in the week, Bunn scored 20 points in a 66-61 first-round victory over Trine and added 19 points and five assists with no turnovers in a 75-66 semifinal win over Adrian. For the tournament, Bunn made 16 of 28 shots from the field (57 percent), including 5 of 8 (62 percent) from 3-point range, and 26 of 30 (87 percent) from the free-throw line. He also grabbed 14 rebounds and added eight assists. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season and in his career.

The MIAA has named Hope guard/forward Philana Greene its women's basketball Player of the Week. A senior from Grandville (Grandville HS), had a strong all-around performance last week, scoring 23 points and adding 13 rebounds, nine assists and eight steals as the Flying Dutch clinched a share of the MIAA title with a pair of victories. She had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists in an 85-49 win over Kalamazoo, then added 14 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists in a 94-75 victory over Saint Mary's. Greene, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and fourth time in her career, made 10 of 14 shots (71 percent) from the field for the week.

Two Hope juniors are being honored as MIAA Players of the Week. Carrie Snikkers of Jenison (Unity Christian HS) is being honored as the women's player of the week for the third time this season while Peter Bunn of Lansing (Lansing Christian HS) is receiving the men's honor for the second time this year.

Carrie Snikkers is sharing the honor with Jessica Centa of Saint Mary's. She scored 31 points and pulled down 21 rebounds as the Flying Dutch strengthened their hold on first place in the MIAA with two conference victories. She scored 18 points and added 10 rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes of action as Hope defeated Calvin, 61-50. She then added 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in 20 minutes of play in a 71-60 win over Alma. Snikkers, who is being honored for the fifth time in her career, made 12 of 20 shots (60 percent) from the field for the week.

Peter Bunn scored 41 points in leading the Flying Dutchmen to a pair of victories last week that moved them into a share of the MIAA lead. He scored 10 points and dished out five assists in an 83-74 win over Alma, then fired in a collegiate career-high 31 points, including four 3-point baskets, as Hope edged Olivet, 71-69. Bunn, who is also being honored for the second time in his career, made 15 of 23 shots (65 percent) from the floor, including 6 of 9 (67 percent) on 3-pointers.

Junior forward Will Bowser of Midland (Dow HS) is the co-player of the week in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). He shares the honor with Kalamazoo forward Ryan Clark. Bowser scored 37 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in two games last week as the Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to five games. He had 17 points and nine rebounds as Hope defeated Trine, 78-60. He then added 20 points and 10 rebounds, including the go-ahead tip-in in the game's final minute, as the Dutchmen handed MIAA leader Calvin its first conference loss, 67-64. Bowser, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and in his career, made 16-of-28 shots (57 percent) from the field for the week, including 5-of-9 (55 percent) on three-point shots.

January 4, 2010

Senior Chris Nelis of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS) has been named an MIAA player of the week. He shares the honor with Olivet junior Michael McClary. Nelis scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors in Hope's Russ DeVette Holiday Classic. He scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 72-68 victory over Madonna, then added 11 points in a 77-62 win over Davenport in the tournament championship game. Nelis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, made 12 of 22 shots (54 percent) from the field for the week.

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Hope center Carrie Snikkers its Player of the Week. Snikkers, a junior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), scored 11 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked six shots and added three steals in just 19 minutes of play as the Flying Dutch stayed unbeaten with an 86-53 victory over Aquinas. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career.

Hope guard Peter Bunn has been named the player of the week in the MIAA. A junior from Lansing (Lansing Christian HS), Bunn scored 31 points and added 11 rebounds as the Flying Dutchmen split two games at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament. He scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and grabbed seven rebounds as Hope defeated MIAA rival Calvin, 79-76, in the consolation game. For the tournament, Bunn made 12-of-20 shots from the field and all six of his free throws. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career. He is the second Hope player to be honored this season, joining teammate Will Bowser.

Two Hope players, Will Bowser and Carrie Snikkers, are being honored as the MIAA basketball players of the week.  

Will Bowser, a junior from Midland (Dow HS), scored a career-high 24 points in leading the Flying Dutchmen to a 65-50 season-opening win over Rochester. He made 9-of-15 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and made all four of his foul shots. He also grabbed five rebounds, three on the offensive end. Bowser is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Carrie Snikkers, a junior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), scored 38 points, pulled down 19 rebounds, blocked eight shots and added seven steals for the week as the Flying Dutch opened their season with three consecutive wins. She scored 17 points in 17 minutes of action in an 82-70 win over Madonna, and added 12 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots in 17 minutes as Hope defeated Wittenberg, Ohio, 80-49, to win its Tipoff Classic. Snikkers, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time in her career, shared tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
