Nutrition will be the focus of the next address in the Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College.

Susan Kundrat, who is president and founder of Nutrition on the Move Inc. and an adjunct member of the faculty at the University of Illinois, will present "Maximum Nutrition for Performance:  Separating Fact from Fiction with Food and Supplements" on Monday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

A licensed, registered dietician, Kundrat works with clients on a variety of nutrition issues.  "Nutrition on the Move" provides sports nutrition tips and educational materials for athletes 10 and up, and is geared toward athletes, coaches, parents and health professionals.  Kundrat also recently formed RK Team Nutrition with sports dietician Michelle Rockwell.

Kundrat is an adjunct lecturer with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She is also the sports nutrition consultant for the Northwestern University Wildcats teams in Evanston, Ill., Bradley University Athletics and several University of Illinois teams.

She is author of the book "101 Sports Nutrition Tips," published by Coaches Choice, and has spoken to athletes across the United States.  She received the SCAN (Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists) Excellence in Practice Award for Sports Nutrition in 2003, and was named Illinois' "Young Registered Dietician of the Year" in 1997.

Kundrat received her B.S. degree in dietetics from Minnesota State University --Mankato, and her master's degree in nutrition from Iowa State University.  She is a member of the American Dietetic Association, the AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine, Nutrition in Complementary Care and Nutrition Entrepreneurs.

She was also a student-athlete herself.  She earned 16 high school letters in five sports, and played college basketball, volleyball and softball.  She was named to the Waldorf College Hall of Fame and was an honor athlete at Minnesota State University --Mankato.

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan, Shoreline Orthopaedics, Holland Hospital Rehabilitation Services, The Bone and Joint Center, and the college.

A total of five lectures have been scheduled through the series for the 2010-11 school year.  The other four addresses are:  "Critical Issues in Sports Related Concussion," by Dr. Duane Dede of the University of Florida on Monday, Nov. 8; "The Well Being of the Athletic Trainer--Personal Care in Crisis Situations," by Dr. Shari Bartz-Smith of Grand Valley State University on Monday, Jan. 24; "Common Hand Injuries in Sports--Recognition and Management," by Dr. Richard Howell of Shoreline Orthopaedics on Monday, Feb. 21; and "Hip Injuries in Athletics" by Dr. Carl Wierks of The Holland Bone and Joint Center on Monday, April 11.  Additional information about the series may be found online at
