Chilean classical guitarist Carlos Perez will be taking the stage of Hope College's Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
"Without a doubt, his musical ability is that of legends," said "St. Louis Today." "Perez is a marvelous artist, fleet of finger, facile but never shallow. He's at home in a variety of styles and brought them all to vivid musical life."
Pérez was born in Santiago in 1976. His interest in guitar playing started when he was young, through the influence of his father. He studied under Ernesto Quezada at the Arts Faculty of the University of Chile, where graduated with top honors. He has been a professor on the university's Arts Faculty since 2008.
Perez was awarded top prizes in major international competitions in Europe and America, winning first prize in: "Alirio Díaz," Venezuela; "René Bartoli," France; "Printemps de La Guitare," Belgium; "Forum Gitarre," Austria; "Fundacion Guerrero," Spain; and "Joaquín Rodrigo Competition," Spain.
He has issued eight CDs and two DVDs, and performed on several European radio stations. He has given recitals in more than 30 countries in North, Central and South America as well as Europe, and has played with orchestras from England, Belgium, the United States, Germany, Lithuania, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Poland and Chile. He has played in international venues including Berlin Philarmonie (Germany), Auditorio Nacional (Spain), Royal Festival Hall (England), Teatro Monumental (Spain) and other prestigious concert halls.
Perez has participated in many guitar and chamber music festivals around the world and is constantly invited to give master classes and lectures at universities and schools of music in Latin America, Europe and the United States. Editions Henry Lemoine of France, Productions d'Oz of Canada and Grenzland-Verlag Theo Hüsgen of Germany have published some of his arrangements and compositions.
Tickets are $10 for regular admission, $7 for senior citizens and children, and $5 for students, and are available at the ticket office in the main lobby of the DeVos Fieldhouse. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and may be called at (616) 395-7890. Tickets will also be available at the door.
The DeVos Fieldhouse is located at 22 Fairbanks Ave., between Ninth and 11th streets. The Knickerbocker Theatre is located at 86 E. Eighth St.
