Jean-Luc Miralda of the Hope College men's swimming & diving team has been chosen the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Week for meets through January 17.

Jean-Luc Miralda of the Hope College men's swimming & diving team has been chosen the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Week for meets through January 17.

The sophomore diver from Tegucigalpa, Honduras (The American School), set a school record in 1-meter diving at the Wheaton, Illinois, Quad, on Saturday.

Miralda's score of 274.35 points passed Jim Mitchell's 1988 Hope six-dive record of 268.70 points.

Miralda also posted a 3-meter diver score of 311.15 points to finish first at the Wheaton quad. He came within 0.85 of a point of matching Mitchell's 1990 Hope six-dive record of 312.0 points.

Miralda's 3-meter score was more than 70 points higher than the runner-up finisher in the event on Saturday.

Miralda also swept both diving events — 272.95 points in 3-meter and 249.10 in 1-meter — Friday in an MIAA dual meet win over Albion. 

Miralda is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. 

Hope returns to action on Saturday, January 24, with a dual meet at Calvin. Start time is 1 p.m.
