Hageman Faith Series to Feature Robert Smith Jr. on Galatians
Dr. Robert Smith Jr. of Beeson Divinity School at Samford University will present “No Other Gospel: Studying the Book of Galatians” on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. at Hope College during The Gathering worship service in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Smith holds the Charles T. Carter Baptist Chair of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School, where he teaches Christian preaching. Previously he served as the Carl E. Bates Associate Professor of Christian Preaching at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. A popular teacher and preacher, he received Southern’s 1996 Findley B. Edge Award for Teaching Excellence.
An ordained Baptist minister, he was pastor of the New Mission Missionary Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 20 years. He earned his doctorate while serving as pastor.
Smith is a contributing editor for a study of Christian ministry in the African American church, “Preparing for Christian Ministry,” and co-editor of “A Mighty Long Journey.” In addition, he has served as an editor of “Our Sufficiency Is of God: Essays on Preaching in Honor of Gardner C. Taylor.” He has also written the book “Doctrine That Dances: Bringing Doctrinal Preaching and Teaching to Life,” which won the 2008 Preaching Book of the Year Award from Preaching magazine and the 2009 Preaching Book of the Year Award from Christianity Today’s preaching.com. He has spoken at more than 100 universities, colleges and seminaries across the United States, Great Britain, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean.
The annual Hageman Faith Series was established to encourage a vibrant Christian faith among the students, faculty and staff of Hope College. The lecture series is endowed to invite recognized Christian speakers to Hope’s campus who will inspire and encourage a living and personal faith in Jesus Christ. Selected by the college’s Campus Ministries team, which is overseen by the dean of the chapel, speakers are chosen on the basis of having an articulate, winsome and challenging message that is relevant to college-aged students seeking to grow in their life with Christ.
