Three Hope Softball Players Claim All-Region Honors
Three Hope College softball players have received all-region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for the 2017 season: pitcher Sydney Jones, centerfielder Sammi Adams and catcher Hayley Reitsma.
It is the second time in three seasons the Flying Dutch have featured three all-region
honorees. Hope finished the 2017 season with a 27-15 overall record as NCAA Division
III regional runner-up and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-champion.
All-Region players are nominated and selected by NFCA member coaches in each of the eight Division III regions. First Team All-Region choices are eligible for selection to the NFCA All-America team, which will be announced the evening of May 24 online at NFCA.org and in person at the NCAA Division III Championship banquet in Oklahoma City.
All-region squads are comprised of three 15-player teams in each of the country’s eight NCAA regions.
Jones made the first team. The junior righthander from South Lyon, Michigan (East HS) posted a 17-7 overall record this season on the mound.
Jones set school records with 17 wins, 11 shutouts, 23 starts, 22 complete games and 229 strikeouts in a single season. Her 1.18 ERA is second-lowest in Flying Dutch history.
Jones also became the Flying Dutch’s career strikeout leader this season.
Jones fielded her position and first base well, recording a .994 fielding percentage with just one error in 154 chances.
Adams is a second-team honoree. The senior from Griffith, Indiana (Griffith) batted leadoff for Hope and led the Flying Dutch with a .406 batting average, 48 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.
Adams equaled the school record in runs scored.
Reitsma is a third-team honoree. The junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) hit .329 with five home runs and a team-leading 42 RBIs. She started every game behind the plate.
Reitsma tied for the fourth most RBIs in Flying Dutch history.
