The Department of Music at Hope College will feature Choro das 3 on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Choro das 3 is a family-based Brazilian instrumental band consisting of three sisters — Corina (flute), Lia (even-string acoustic guitar) and Elisa (mandolin, clarinet, banjo and piano) — and their father, Eduardo (pandeiro).

The band plays Brazilian instrumental music, and its main style is Choro music (pronounced shaw-roo), an instrumental music genre that emerged in Brazil in the 19th century.  Choro is best described in American terms as “the New Orleans jazz of Brazil.” It is a complex popular musical form based on improvisation, and like New Orleans jazz, blues or ragtime, grew from a formalized musical structure from European dance forms like the polka, march, mazurka and waltz.

For the last four years, Choro das 3 has toured around the United States, Mexico and France. The ensemble has performed more than 40 concerts, and has played and taught workshops at many festivals and universities.  Choro das 3 previously performed at Hope College in 2017.

The Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts is located at 221 Columbia Ave., between Ninth and 10th streets.
