Hope College’s Knickerbocker Theatre will continue its Fall Film Series with “Love, Gilda” on Monday-Saturday, Oct. 1-6, at 7:30 p.m.

poster of Love Gilda“Love, Gilda” offers a unique look into the honest and whimsical world of beloved performer Gilda Radner, an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member who died from ovarian cancer in 1989.

Radner has been called one of the “great comic geniuses of the 20th century,” and is regularly listed among Lucille Ball and other comedy legends. Among the Emmy-award winning comedian’s memorable creations were Roseanne Roseannadanna, Baba Wawa, Emily Litella and Lisa Loopner.  The film weaves together her recently discovered audiotapes, interviews with friends (Chevy Chase, Lorne Michaels, Laraine Newman, Paul Shaffer and Martin Short), rare home movies and diaries read by modern-day comedians (Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Cecily Strong).

The college’s share of ticket proceeds from the screening will be donated to Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids, which is part of a network of community organizations established in Radner’s name for people with cancer, their families and friends.

Radner’s husband, actor and comedian Gene Wilder, co-founded the first Gilda’s Club in New York City with friends of Radner, as she hoped others would find the support she did in her cancer journey.  Since the New York club opened in 1995, local affiliates have been established across the country.

Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids is a free emotional health support community of children, adults, families and friends on any kind of cancer journey or those grieving a death due to any cause. Its comprehensive program, delivered by professionals, includes education, structured sharing times, networking, lectures, workshops and social activities.

Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids is one of the largest and busiest of the 42 affiliates in North America. The organization runs entirely on charitable donations and currently serves more than 10,000 individuals each year at its clubhouses in Grand Rapids and Lowell, in various schools and community centers. More information is available at gildasclubgr.org.

The Fall Film Series will continue with “Neither Wolf, Nor Dog” on Monday-Saturday, Oct. 15-20, and “Gavagai” on Monday-Saturday, Nov. 12-17. All films begin at 7:30 p.m.
