Faculty and students from all of the arts programs at Hope College will perform and exhibit work in a single evening on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The event, “Transformed by Hope: A Celebration of the Arts,” has been scheduled as part of the college’s presidential-inauguration week. Art and art history faculty and students will exhibit works in the lobby; music will feature student ensembles and faculty soloists; theatre students will present several readings and musical-theatre songs; and dance students will perform a piece. A reception will follow.
In the first half of the program, organist Huw Lewis of the faculty will perform “Final” from “Premiere Symphonie, op. 14,” by Los Vierne, and the Chapel Choir, directed by faculty member Chris Dekker, will perform “Let the People Praise Thee,” by William Mathias. Sophomore Alex Johnson will read “Fascinations Fostered Here,” written by faculty member David James, followed by the Wind Ensemble, directed by faculty member Gabe Southard, which will perform “Gandalf” from “Symphony No. 1, Lord of the Rings,” by Johann DeMeij. Sophomore Zach Pickle will read “After Hearing the Professor Say, ‘She’s Just an Average Student,’” written by retired faculty member Jack Ridl. Faculty members Jung Woo Kim and Lora Kolean will perform “The Call,” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Senior Teresa Cameon will sing “Alive” from “A Proper Place,” by Curtis Rhodes and Leslie Becker. To close the first half of the program, the Symphony and Jazz Arts Collective, directed by faculty member Christopher Fashun, will perform Fred Sturm’s “Uppin’ Adam,” with faculty member Jordan Van Hemert as featured soloist.
After intermission, the concert will continue with a theatre reading by sophomore Sofia Muniz of “Autumn Garden,” written by faculty member Susanna Childress. Faculty violinist Mihai Craioveanu will perform “Danse Espagnole” from “La Vide Breve,” by Manuel de Falla, followed by junior Madison Meeron, who will sing “On the Steps of the Palace” from “Into the Woods,” by Stephen Sondheim. Flautist Gabe Southard will perform “Carmen Fantasie,” by François Bourne, and seniors Megan Clark and Maxwell Lam will sing “You’re the Top” from “Anything Goes,” by Cole Porter. In closing, students Emma Speers, Tori Homann, Liv Panozzo, Celine Carroll, Caitlyn Enright, Tia Santi, Olivia Coolman, Ashly Hayden and Emily King will perform a dance piece titled “Testify.”
The exhibition in the lobby will feature artwork by faculty members Lisa Walcott and Greg Lookerse, along with pieces by studio-art majors Caleigh White, Esther Hwang, Nora Hendricks and Abigail Brummel.
The Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts is located at 221 Columbia Ave., between 10th and 13th streets.
The arts celebration is among a variety of events scheduled in conjunction with the Friday, Sept. 13, inauguration of Matthew A. Scogin as the college’s 14th president. Others include a concert featuring Young Oceans on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and the 54th annual Hope-Holland Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 14.
