Claire Hallock has joined an elite group of Hope College tennis players in receiving All-America honors.
The junior from Lakeland, Florida (Harrison Center HS) is the fifth different Flying
Dutch women's tennis player to be named an All-American.
Hallock, who played No. 1 singles for the Flying Dutch this season, is one of 24 All-America
singles players. The other 23 honorees played doubles.
“This accomplishment is well-deserved,” head coach Bob Cawood said. “To see her growth
over the past three years, going from three singles to two to one, has been awesome.
She keeps working hard every single day.”
Hallock follows previous Hope All-Americans: Audrey Coates (1994 singles, 1996 doubles),
Becky Lucas (1996 doubles), Kim Baxter (1987 doubles), and Colleen Sandro (1987 doubles,
1986 singles).
This season, Hallock matched her career-high for singles wins with a 25-3 record.
She is tied for third all-time among Flying Dutch players in singles wins.
Hallock’s 71 career singles wins are sixth most all-time at Hope.
As a junior, Hallock earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable
Player honors for the first time.
Hallock also helped the Flying Dutch claimed their fifth consecutive MIAA regular-season
championship and win the MIAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive time. She also
played No. 1 doubles for the Flying Dutch with Amanda Bandrowski and posted a 22-8
record.
“She’s worked over the past two years on her offensive game and getting more downhill
play,” Cawood said. “She has the ability to go beat anybody with that downhill play
if she’s executing well enough. Her ability to come to the net has improved year by
year.”
The ITA selection criteria for Division III All-Americans is: top 8 seed in the NCAA
singles tournament, win one round at the NCAA singles tournament, finish in the Top
20 in the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, win USTA/ITA Fall Regional
Tournament, or win a first-round match at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
All-America honors are awarded to doubles teams that are a top 4 seed in NCAA doubles
tournament, win one round at the NCAA doubles tournament, finish in the Top 10 in
the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, win the USTA/ITA Fall Regional Tournament,
or win a first-round match at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
