Hope College’s Erin Powers has been selected as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

The freshman defender from Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) helped the Flying Dutch shut out two league opponents last week and registered her first collegiate assist.

Playing on the backline, Powers aided Hope’s efforts to limit MIAA-leading Adrian College to seven shots during a 1-0 Hope victory on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

On Tuesday, Powers and the Flying Dutch held Trine to five shots during a 2-0 victory in Angola, Indiana. She also earned an assist on Hope’s second goal of the first half.

The two victories propelled the Flying Dutch to within two points of first place in the MIAA standings.

This is the first MIAA Player of the Week honor for Powers.
