The Hope College men’s and women’s tennis teams competed with the nation’s best in the classroom as well as on the court this season.
Both the Flying Dutchmen and Flying Dutch recorded five Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Scholar-Athletes apiece.
ITA Scholar-Athletes must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner,
2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic
year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including
freshman through senior year).
The MIAA champion Flying Dutch’s honorees are now graduates Erin LaBarge of Hudsonville,
Michigan (Hudsonville HS) and Taylor LaBarge of Hudsonville, MIchigan (Hudsonville),
juniors Amanda Bandrowski of Traverse City, Michigan (St. Francis) and Claire Hallock
of Lakeland, Florida (Harrison Center), and sophomore Bailey Chorney of Waunakee,
Wisconsin (Waunakee).
The Flying Dutchmen’s ITA Scholar-Athletes are now graduates Justin Folkert of Hamilton,
Michigan (Hamilton), Michael Kiley of Muskegon, Michigan (Mona Shores), Christian
Rhoades of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian), and Mark VanderStoep of Holland,
Michigan (West Ottawa), and junior Danny Kroeze of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian).
“I am extremely proud of all our student-athletes,” head coach Bob Cawood said. “This
encompasses what a student-athlete strives for and what I believe the Division III
philosophy is about. To be disciplined in the classroom prepares you to excel on the
court as well later in the life.”
Erin LaBarge completed her double major in business and psychology in May. Taylor
LaBarge finishes a double major of business and accounting (public).
Bandrowski is an exercise major. Hallock is an engineering major with a focus on chemical
engineering. Chorney is a business and Spanish major.
Folkert majored in business and accounting (public). Kiley completed a major in computer
science. Rhoades majored in business and economics. VanderStoep finished a major of
accounting (public).
Kroeze is a business major.
Both teams also have claimed 2019 ITA All-Academic Team honors. ITA All-Academic teams
have a team GPA of 3.20 or higher.
