Hope College’s Michael Kiley serves up healthy competition on the tennis court without sacrificing sportsmanship.
The senior from Muskegon, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) has been chosen as the 2019 recipient
of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Dr. Allen B. Stowe Memorial
sportsmanship award.
The award is in memory of the 1920 Kalamazoo College graduate and founder of the Hornets’
tennis program.
Kiley is Hope’s 23rd recipient of the Stowe Memorial Award. He played No. 3 singles
and No. 2 doubles for the Flying Dutchmen.
It is well-deserved recognition, head coach Bob Cawood said.
“Everybody wants to go out and do the best they can and to win,” Cawood said. “To
do it in a way with grace and be able to do with sportsmanship are something we as
a program and we as a school pride ourselves on. We try to win and lose with grace.
“Mike does an awesome job with that. He is our calm man on the court. He is our level-headed,
straight-laced guy. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion, but is always respectful to
his opponent. All of our guys are, but Mike has done it to that next level.”
