Hope College’s Mitchel Achien’g has been selected as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

The senior from Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu School) is recognized after posting two school-record performances at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open on Friday.

Achien’g clocked a record 60-meter hurdle time of 9.22 seconds at Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Michigan.

Achien'g passed the nine-year-old mark of 9.34 held by Kara VandeGuchte. She finished 12th in the meet that featured competitors from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA.

In the triple jump, Achien'g topped her school record, set last season, by leaping 11.01 meters (36 feet, 1 ½ inches) and finishing eighth. Her previous best was 10.75 meters (35-3 ¼).

Achien'g also competed in the 60-meter dash and placed 23rd with a run of 8.19.

This is the first time Achien’g has been MIAA Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. She was the MIAA Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week on April 1, 2019.
