Softball Pair Selected As All-MIAA First Team Selections

Hope College’s Shay Pinhey and Savannah Dixon made their presence felt on the softball diamond this season.

The productive duo for the Flying Dutch both have received All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association First Team honors for the 2019 season.

A designated player, Pinhey batted leadoff and hit .376 in 393 in 16 MIAA games.

The senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS) ranked 14th in the league in batting average. Pinhey totaled 24 hits against MIAA opponents, including seven doubles.

“Shay has had such a great career. She is playing so well in her senior season and is clearly a well-respected hitter in this league,” head coach Mary VandeHoef said. “Her leadership of this team all year has been outstanding on and off the field. She sets the tone so often in games by getting on base in the leadoff spot, and gets us rolling. I'm excited to see her earn First Team in her senior season and to be finishing so strong.”

A two-year starter at shortstop, The sophomore from Niles, Michigan (Edwardsburg) collected 23 hits, including a MIAA-leading eight doubles and one triple from the third spot in Hope’s lineup.

Dixon also tied for first place among MIAA players with 19 runs batted in.

“Savannah has been so key for us this season — both at shortstop and in the heart of our line-up,” VandeHoef said. “She can change a game in a moment both on defense or at the plate.  Her competitiveness pushes our team to continually improve and grow. She has very high expectations for herself in those areas as well.”

Two Hope player made the All-MIAA Second Team: catcher Morgann Kanouse and second baseman Arinn King.

Kanouse batted a career-high .313 during MIAA games during her first season behind the plate. The sophomore from Cadillac, Michigan (Cadillac) moved from third base where she played as a freshman.

“Morgann is doing an unbelievable job behind the plate for us this season,” VandeHoef said. “So few balls get past her, and her arm helps us keep runners from advancing. It's been great to see her flourish back there and also have another solid year at the plate.”

King hit .378 against MIAA teams during her first college season. The freshman from Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) took over the No. 2 spot in Hope’s lineup during the season.

“Arinn is having a really great freshman season,” VandeHoef said. “She plays a really steady second base and also has come through with some really clutch hitting for us throughout the season. She executes really well at the plate, is a great situational hitter, and has power as well.”
