Hope College’s Claire Hallock has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Karen Caine Award.
The scholar-athlete award honors Karen Caine, former long-time women’s tennis coach
at Adrian College.
Hallock is a senior from Lakeland, Florida (Harrison Center HS). She is Hope’s fifth
honoree since the award began in 2007.
Hallock is the second MIAA women’s tennis player to receive both the Caine and the
Sue Little Sportsmanship Awards in her career. She won the sportsmanship award in
2019. Adrian College’s Lindsey Ehselman accomplished the feat during the 2008 season.
“I cannot begin to say how proud I am for Claire to receive this award,” head coach
Bob Cawood said. “There were some amazing candidates, so for Claire to win this award
to conclude her Hope College career is special.”
On the court, Hallock played the top three singles flights and all three doubles flights
during her Flying Dutch career. She finished fourth all-time at Hope with 80 singles
wins in 93 matches and tied for third with 76 doubles wins in 102 matches.
Hallock became Hope’s first two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American
last month. She is a three-time, All-MIAA selection, including Most Valuable Player
honors as a junior in 2019.
Off the court, Hallock recently graduated from Hope College after completing a double
major: B.S. in chemical engineering and B.A. in chemistry. She recorded a 3.7 grade
point average.
Hallock claimed Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete honors in 2019
and made the MIAA Academic Honor Roll in 2017 and 2019.
Hallock worked as a research assistant for Hope’s engineering department in 2019.
She also was a research and development intern for TreattUSA in Lakeland, Florida
in 2018 and an engineering intern for the City of Lakeland, Florida in 2017.
