Five members of the Hope College women’s tennis team have claimed Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2020-21 school year: Bailey Chorney, Brigid DeVries, Leah Newhof, Mackenzie Rhode, and Annika Weeber.

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular-season and tournament champion Flying Dutch also received the ITA All-Academic Team Award.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:

  • have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year.
  • be listed on the institutional eligibility form.

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:

  • have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
  • all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
  • all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year

Chorney is a senior from Waunakee, Wisconsin (Waunakee HS) and a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete recipient. The business and Spanish double major played matches at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Flying Dutch while earning All-MIAA Second Team honors this spring and the MIAA’s Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award.

Newhof is a senior from Caledonia, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) who claimed All-MIAA First Team honors this spring. The exercise science major played matches at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for Hope.

DeVries is a senior from Bradenburg, Kentucky (Meade Couty) and a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete honoree. The business major played matches at No. 2 singles, No. 2 doubles, and No. 3 doubles for the Flying Dutch.

Weeber is a freshman from Rockford, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian). The exercise science major played at No. 3 singles, No. 4 singles, No. 5 singles, No. 1 doubles, and No. 2 doubles for Hope.

Rhode is a junior from Frankfurt, Illinois (Lincoln-Way East). The psychology major played matches at No. 5 singles, No. 6 singles, and No. 3 doubles for the Flying Dutch.
