The Tocqueville Forum of Hope College, along with the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal, will feature Ian Rowe and John Wood discussing “Freedom or Equity – What is the Best Path Forward for America?” on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

Rowe and Wood will each deliver remarks, with a question-and-answer period with the audience following.  The event will be moderated by Dr. Jeffrey Polet, professor of political science at Hope.

As explained in the presentation’s abstract: “In the past few years Critical Race Theory has become widespread, familiar, and controversial as a ‘lens’ through which we view race relations. Are there better, breader, and more productive options available to us? Does the American tradition give us another way of thinking about race matters? Join us for a wide-ranging conversation on these and other issues.”

Ian Rowe is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he focuses on education and upward mobility, family formation, and adoption. Mr. Rowe is also the co-founder of Vertex Partnership Academies, a new network of character-based International Baccalaureate high schools; the chairman of the board of Spence-Chapin, a nonprofit adoption services organization; and the co-founder of the National Summer School Initiative. He concurrently serves as a senior visiting fellow at the Woodson Center and a writer for the 1776 Unites Campaign.

John Wood Jr. is a national leader for Braver Angels, an organization committed to bringing "Americans together to bridge the partisan divide and strengthen our democratic republic.” He is a former nominee for Congress, former vice-chairman of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County, an adviser for The American Project at Pepperdine University, and a noted writer and speaker on issues of political and racial reconciliation. He also is a writer for the 1776 Unites campaign.
