The Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland will continue its winter film series with “Rosemead,” screening February 9–14 at 7 p.m.

Starring Lucy Liu, “Rosemead” is inspired by a harrowing true story, concerning an ailing mother who takes drastic measures to protect her troubled teenage son.

“A career-defining performance by Lucy Liu” says Variety.

Adapted from a 2017 Los Angeles Times story by Frank Shyong, the film follows the mother, Irene (Lucy Liu), as she struggles to care for her son Joe (Lawrence Shou), who lives with schizophrenia. Fearful of stigma within her Asian-American community, Irene keeps Joe’s diagnosis hidden from other parents while questioning the role of therapy and confronting the reality of her own declining health.

As she faces uncertainty about who will care for Joe after her death, Irene’s devotion is tested in profound and unsettling ways. The Hollywood Reporter calls it “A harrowing psychological study of a woman who thinks she has no options.”

The Knickerbocker Film Series will continue with Trifole, screening March 2–7. The last film of the series, “The President’s Cake,” is scheduled for March 16–21.
