
The Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre will continue its Classic Film Series with four Robert Redford classic films. Focusing on his films from the late 1960s and early 1970s, the series will feature the following films, all airing on a Monday night at 7 p.m.:
- Feb. 16: “Barefoot in The Park”
- Feb. 23: “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid”
- March. 9: "Jeremiah Johnson”
- March. 23: “The Way We Were”
Monday, February 16: Barefoot in The Park (1967)
A romantic comedy starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda as a newlywed couple, Paul and Corie, adjusting to life together in a small New York City apartment. Corie is free-spirited and adventurous, while Paul is cautious and uptight, leading to comical arguments and misunderstandings. The couple navigates quirky neighbors, family interference, and unexpected mishaps, including a dramatic rooftop scene, ultimately learning to appreciate and compromise for each other.
Monday, February 23: Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (1969)
A Western buddy film stars Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy and Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid, two outlaws on the run after a series of train robberies. As they flee a determined posse, the duo travels to Bolivia seeking a new life but discovers that crime and danger follow them. Along the way, they rely on their cleverness, courage, and friendship to survive, confronting the limits of their freedom and the inevitability of fate.
Monday, March 9: Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
A Western drama starring Robert Redford as Jeremiah Johnson, a Mexican War veteran who retreats into the Rocky Mountains to live as a mountain man. Facing harsh winters, isolation, and encounters with Native American tribes, Johnson learns survival skills from the eccentric Chris Lapp. He finds companionship and builds a family, but tragedy strikes when violence claims the lives of his wife and adopted son. Despite these hardships, Johnson emerges as a resilient and legendary figure in the wilderness.
Monday, March 23: The Way We Were(1973)
A romantic drama starring Barbra Streisand as Katie Morosky, a passionate and politically active young woman, and Robert Redford as Hubbell Gardiner, a charming, carefree writer. The two meet in college, fall in love, and struggle to reconcile their vastly different personalities and life choices. Their relationship is tested by societal expectations, personal ambitions, and political tensions, ultimately leading to a bittersweet parting that reflects the complexity of love and compromise.
Tickets for all films are $10 each and are free for Hope students. Tickets are available at the ticket office in the Events and Conferences Office located in downtown Holland in the Anderson-Werkman Financial Center (100 E. Eighth St.). The ticket office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at 616-395-7890. Tickets are also available online at hope.edu/tickets and will also be available at the door.
