Summer 2010 Writing Evaluation

Students of the class of 2010 participated in a writing evaluation exercise in which essays were written in the Fall, 2006 (frosh year) and Spring, 2010 (senior year). A total of 113 pairs of papers were written. In summer, 2010, twelve faculty were divided into four teams of three readers each to evaluate the pairs of papers (i.e., readers assessed students’ papers from both first year and senior year). Each pair of papers was evaluated by the three faculty on a six-point scale on four dimensions:

  • Quality
  • Clarity
  • Organization
  • Mechanics

The results of this writing assessment indicate that Hope students improve from their first year to senior year on all four dimensions. The effect sizes were very large on all dimensions. All four groups of evaluators rated the senior writing as significantly higher than the first-year writing on all four dimensions.
