Rick DeVries
Assistant Professor of Economics InstructionDr. Rick Devries, a specialist in monetary economics, has been teaching economics to college students for three decades. He currently teaches the upper level elective Money and Banking and is among the professors who teach introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics courses.
Dr. DeVries enjoys teaching majors and non-majors alike, as he regards teaching as a way to build lasting relationships with students. He envisions his role to be more than just teaching students about economics, but also an opportunity to help them navigate their college experience and beyond. He often continues as a mentor long after students graduate.
Dr. Devries began teaching at Hope in 2016. Previously, he served on the faculty of Calvin College (now University), including in its economics department, in its education department and as the director for four years of its First Year Seminar program.

Outside the College
Dr. DeVries enjoys all things outdoors. He is an avid fisherman, loves camping with his wife and is a self-proclaimed “rock nerd”; he can often be found combing the beaches of Lake Michigan looking for Petoskey stones. He also is thrilled to be the proud grandparent of two (and counting) wonderful grandchildren.
