- Structure-function relationships at surfaces and interfaces
- Surface chemistry and intermolecular forces
- Tribology (friction, adhesion, lubrication, and wear), nanotribology
- Tribochemistry/mechanochemistry
- Surface analysis: AFM (atomic force microscopy), ATR-FTIR (attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy)
