Gabe Warren
Assistant Professor of Nursing InstructionGabe Warren ’06 regards his career in nursing as an extension of his former role as
an offensive lineman on the Hope College football team: protecting and serving the
team. He majored at Hope in exercise science, and at first had his eye on a career
in biomechanics. As an upperclassman, though, he became intrigued by how the body
responds and adapts to illness. So, not long after graduating, he went back to school
to prepare for a career in nursing, which he recognized would integrate his commitment
to acts of service with his interest in the physical processes of disease and recovery.
From 2011 through mid–2023, Professor Warren served in a variety of nursing roles
at Holland Hospital, a mile and a half from Hope’s campus. For the first seven years,
he cared for patients in the intensive care unit and telemetry unit (the cardiac unit).
Later he moved into administrative positions, including on the quality improvement
team and with Medicare and Medicaid registries. In 2021, he had the opportunity to
lead professional development workshops for his fellow nurses, which drew on the certificate
in nursing education he earned as part of his master's degree program. In 2023, he
joined the Hope College Department of Nursing as a full-time faculty member. He continues
to work part-time at Holland Hospital as a rapid response nurse, assisting in any
unit of the hospital as needs arise during his shifts.
Professor Warren’s courses focus on medical and surgical nursing care of adults, including critical care. He encourages student discussion in his classes, to generate student's critical thinking so they train their mental connections and later, on the job, can retrieve information that they learned in nursing skills courses, and apply it.

Outside the College
Professor Warren is a small town guy — he grew up in a rural community near Lansing, Michigan. He, his wife, Christine ’06, and their two children live in Hamilton, a small town south of Holland. He coaches football and baseball in Hamilton's community recreation program. They enjoy outdoor sports, from Lake Michigan and its beaches in the summer to skiing and playing in the snow come wintertime. He's a Michigan State University Spartans fan, and (of course) roots for Hope College teams, too.
