Hope College will feature Margaret Cogswell's "River Fugues" in the gallery of the De Pree Art Center from Tuesday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 7.
The exhibition is opening in conjunction with the college's annual Critical Issues Symposium, which is running Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 6-7, and is examining the theme "At Water's Edge: Complacency, Thirst, Action."
Cogswell will present an artist's talk on Friday, Oct. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in Cook Auditorium of the De Pree Art Center. A reception will follow at the gallery on Friday, Oct. 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The public is invited to all of the events. Admission is free.
In the last five years, Cogswell has focused her faculties on exploring the ever-shifting banks and waters of American rivers - and produced a series of installations that are among the most original in contemporary art. The River Fugues use space, sound, video, and sculpture to explore the interaction between the great rivers of North America and post-industrial American culture.
Cogswell will arrive on Friday, Oct. 2, to install a version of this ongoing "River Fugues" with the help of Hope studio art majors that will prove to be unique to the De Pree gallery's exhibition space.
The De Pree Art Center is located at 160 E. 12th St., on Columbia Avenue at 12th Street. The regular gallery hours are Mondays through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Gallery hours may be reduced during breaks and holidays, and because of the college's fall break the gallery will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17 and 18. The gallery is handicapped accessible.
