Michael Atwell

Hope quarterback Michael Atwell has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District® Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The senior from Geneseo, Ill., (Geneseo HS) carries a 3.90 GPA while pursuing a double major of Biology and Chemistry. He has thrown for 2,245 yards and 17 touchdowns this season while leading the Flying Dutchmen to a 7-2 overall record.

Hope will play for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship and NCAA Division III playoff berth on Nov. 16 when it hosts Albion.

Atwell, who is applying for medical school, was the only quarterback among 24 NCAA Division III honorees in District 6 that covered the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is the second consecutive time he's been selected Academic All-District®.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

The Capital One Academic All-District Team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

The Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

This is the third year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
