The Hope College jazz studies area will present three concerts across Monday-Thursday, Nov. 13-16.
The Jazz Chamber ensembles will perform on Monday, Nov. 13; there will be a vocal jazz concert on Tuesday, Nov. 14; and the Jazz Arts Collective, OTD (for Organ, Tenor and Drums” and the Mainstream Ensemble will perform on Thursday, Nov. 16. The first two concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. and the last concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the John and Dede Howard Recital Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.
The public is invited to all three events. Admission is free.
The jazz chamber ensembles concert on Monday, Nov. 13, will feature the Verve combo, coached by Tom Lockwood; the Blue Note Ensemble, coached by Steve Talaga; the Brazilian Ensemble, coached by Nate Roberts and Christopher Fashun; and the Concord Ensemble, coached by Jeff Shoup. The Verve combo will perform “How Insensitive,” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “I Love You for Sentimental Reasons,” by Williams Best and Ivory Watson; and Well You Needn’t,” by Thelonious Monk. The Blue Note Ensemble will perform “Secret Love,” by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster; “Little Sunflower,” by Freddie Hubbard; and “Just Friends,” by John Klenner and Sam Lewis. The Brazilian Ensemble will perform “Naquele Tempo,” by Pixinguinha and Bendito Lacerda; and “Andre de Sapato Novo,” by Andre Victor Correa. The Concord Ensemble will perform “The Sidewinder,” by Lee Morgan; “Anthropology,” by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; and “Blue Bossa,” by Kenny Dorham.
The vocal jazz recital on Wednesday, Nov. 14, will feature performances by multiple students coached by faculty member Edye Hyde. Songs that the students will perform are “Easy to Love” and “Night and Day,” by Cole Porter; “Nature Boy,” by Eden Ahbez; “Corcovado” by Antonio Carlos Jobin; “Autumn Leaves” by Josep Kosma/Johnny Mercer; “Fine and Mellow,” by Billie Holiday; “Anthropology,” by Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie; “Angel Eyes,” by Matt Dennis/Earl Brent; “Body and Soul,” by Edward Heyman, Johnny Green, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton; “The Way You Look Tonight,” by Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern; “Georgia on My Mind,” by Hoagy Carmichael; “I Want You Back,” by The Corporation; “It Had to Be You,” by Gus Khan and Isham Jones; and “Nancy with The Laughing Face,” by Jimmy Van Heusen and Phil Silvers.
The Jazz Arts Collective, OTD and the Mainstream Ensemble performing on Thursday, Nov. 16, are coached by Brian Coyle. The Mainstream Ensemble will perform “Sugar,” by Stanley Turrentine; “Corcovado,” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “All the Things You Are,” by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein; and “Afro Blue,” by Mongo Santamaria. OTD will perform “Take A Walk,” by Michael Brecker; “The Bus Depot,” by Brian Coyle; “Nica’s Dream,” by Horace Silver; and “Lean Years,” by Pat Martino. The Jazz Arts Collective will perform “Chucho,” “Mary Lou’s Blues” and “Bone Crusher,” by Bill Cunliffe; and “Superstition,” by Stevie Wonder (arrangement) by Miguel Zenon.
The college’s jazz chamber ensembles afford students the opportunity to perform in the classic small group combo setting. The ensembles vary in size and instrumentation, and place a creative focus on improvisation and group communication. All of the ensembles perform works from the classic jazz repertoire. The more advanced jazz chamber ensembles also perform repertoire from the contemporary jazz world. These ensembles also place an emphasis on original student and faculty compositions. All of the ensembles are coached by members of the Hope College jazz faculty.
The Jazz Arts Collective is the premier large jazz ensemble at Hope College. The Collective places a creative focus on ensemble communication and improvisation. Comprised of a rhythm section and flexible wind/string instrumentation, this select group performs compositions and arrangements from across the full spectrum of music.
The Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts is located at 221 Columbia Ave., between Ninth and 10th streets.
