Violist Barbara Corbató will present a faculty recital at Hope College on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. in the John and Dede Howard Recital Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Corbató will be performing “G Major Suite,” by J.S. Bach; “Lachrymae,” by Benjamin Britten; “The 3 Gs,” by Kenji Bunch; and “Sonata for Viola and Piano,” by Rebecca Clarke.  The pieces were chosen by Corbató to highlight the versatility of the viola. Corbató will be joined by her colleague, pianist Jennifer Wolfe.

Corbató is currently assistant principal viola of the Grand Rapids Symphony, where she has performed since 1990. In addition, she is an active chamber musician, performing with the Perugino String Quartet since 2007, and the Grand Rapids Symphony’s educational ensemble, the Calder Quintet. She also performs chamber music regularly at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck and in other concerts with her symphony colleagues.

Corbató is active as a teacher, serving on the faculty at Hope College, where she teaches viola and a viola pedagogy and literature course, while also maintaining a home viola studio.  Additionally, she has served on the viola faculty at Calvin College and at the Calvin String Summit.

Before settling in West Michigan, Corbató performed in the New World Symphony, the Spoleto Festival of South Carolina and Italy, and the orchestras of Columbus, Flint and Saginaw. She has also participated in music festivals in Santa Barbara, California; Aspen and Keystone, Colorado; and, most recently, Saugatuck. She holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Michigan.

The Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts is located at 221 Columbia Ave., between Ninth and 10th streets.
