Hope College will present a concert featuring West Michigan guitar composers on Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.
Andrew Bergeron, Robert Lunn, Jonathan Marshall and John Telfer will perform individual, original works for the concert.
Bergeron is an instructor of guitar and music theory at Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University and Aquinas College. He received his Master of Music degree in composition at Michigan State University School of Music, where he received the “Paul Harder Composition Scholarship.” Bergeron performs with Folias, a nationally touring flute and guitar duo that specializes in original compositions and Latin American music that he co-founded with his wife, flutist Carmen Maret. His contribution as both a composer and performer with Folias has produced six CDs of original music and arrangements for flute and guitar.
Lunn, who is a 1996 Hope graduate, received his master’s in music theory and Composition from The Pennsylvania State University and his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University. Winner of the 2008 Ruth Friscoe Award for his Sonata for Guitar, he was also awarded the Graduate Teaching Award in Music Theory while teaching at Ohio State. He currently teaches at Lake Michigan College and Grand Valley State University. Lunn studied guitar with Larry Malfroid at Hope, and participated in master classes with Christopher Parkening and Paul O’Dette. He has released 11 albums.
Marshall is a Michigan-born classical guitarist/composer who currently teaches at Grand Rapids Community College and Cornerstone University. Marshall completed his master’s degree at the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati under Professor Clare Callahan. He owns and operates Jonathan Marshall Guitars (concert classical guitar dealer), and runs Grand Rapids Community College’s International Guitar Series.
Telfer holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in theology and guitar performance from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, from which he graduated summa cum laude and was named Outstanding Graduating Music Major. He has experience studying, composing, and performing jazz, folk, pop and classical music. Telfer has participated in master classes with the Grammy-Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet as well as Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic of the Chicago-based AKGI Guitar Duo.
Individual tickets are $10 for regular admission, $7 for senior citizens, and $5 for Hope students, faculty and staff. Tickets are available online and at the ticket office in the Events and Conferences Office located downtown in the Anderson-Werkman Financial Center (100 E. Eighth St.). The ticket office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at 616-395-7890.
