Hope College will feature West Michigan chamber players in partnership with the Free at 3 series on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The event will feature various works performed by violinist Mihai Craioveanu, clarinetist John
Varineau, cellist Alicia Eppinga, pianist Sukkyung Cho and guest pianist Joan Conway.
The event is being presented in honor of Conway, who founded the Free at 3 series
and is a retired member of the Hope music faculty and well-known soloist chamber musician
and accompanist.
Varineau, Cho and Craioveanu will open the performance with “Petite Suite,” by Darius Milhaud. Craioveanu and Eppinga will continue with “Sonata,” by Maurice Ravel. Craioveanu and Conway will perform Claude Debussy’s “Beau Soir.” The performance will close with Craioveanu, Eppinga and Cho performing work by Ernest Chausson.
Conway was a member of the Hope faculty for 33 years, 1969 to 2001. She founded the popular Free at 3 chamber series 10 years ago at Holland’s Herrick District Library, with the series now occurring at First Reformed Church, which is also in Holland. Some of Conway’s appearances have included Boston’s Gardner Museum and Washington’s Corcoran Gallery. Conway is a past president of the Michigan Music Teachers’ Association, where she received the Teacher of the Year Award and the first Distinguished Service Award. At present she teaches a studio of private students in her new Freedom Village home.
The audience is invited to a dessert reception in the lobby of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts immediately following the concert.
