The Hope College Orchestra will perform on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Titled “Master and Apprentice,” the concert will highlight the teacher-student relationship and compositional styles of Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven. The orchestra will perform Haydn's Symphony No. 94 in G Major, “Surprise,” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major, op. 21.
The Hope College Orchestra performs under the leadership of Christopher Fashun, director of orchestras and the music director of the Brazilian Music Ensemble, as well as teaching applied percussion and instrumental music education.
Fashun was a 2018 recipient of a U.S. Postdoctoral Fulbright Award in All Disciplines and lived and researched Afro-Brazilian music in Salvador da Bahia in 2019. His project focused on the dissemination of Afro-Brazilian music and culture in the city of Salvador da Bahia.
In addition to his activities at Hope College, Fashun is an active guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator and percussionist. He has served on the music faculties at St. Ambrose University and Goshen College, and has directed orchestras, wind bands, jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles and drum lines at the secondary level.
