Economist Dr. Angela Dills of Western Carolina University will present the address “The Winners and Losers of School Choice” on Monday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at Hope College in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

As noted in the lecture’s abstract, a growing number of families choose to educate their children other than in their residentially assigned public school.  Dills will discuss the variety of educational options available to K-12 students in the United States and what the research says about the effectiveness of the options.

Dills is the Gimelstob-Landry Distinguished Professor of Regional Economic Development at Western Carolina University. She specializes in the economics of education, crime and health, and her research focuses on policy issues such as school choice, accountability, peer effects, college quality, and alcohol and drug prohibition. Her research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Health Economics, Economic Inquiry, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and the Economics of Education Review.

She received a B.A. from the University of Virginia, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Boston University. She previously held faculty positions at Clemson University, Mercer University, Wellesley College and Providence College.

The event is hosted by the college’s Markets & Morality student organization and co-sponsored by the college’s Department of Economics and Business.

Markets & Morality aims to support and celebrate freedom of expression in the context of the liberal arts by hosting speakers and films on topics spanning the economic, political and cultural aspects of human civilization, with a special concern for human flourishing as understood in Christian perspective.
