Two Hope College student-athletes have been named to the GTE Academic Great Lakes
All-District women's at-large team for the fall and winter sports season.
Senior Ellen Schultz of Maple City (Glen Lake HS) and junior Rebecca Timmer of Pella,
Iowa(Pella Community HS) are among 10 honorees from colleges in Michigan, Ohio and
Tennessee.
Schultz and Timmer are being honored as cross country athletes. They are now eligible
for GTE Academic All-America consideration.
Five of the 10 honorees are from Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)
colleges. The other MIAA athletes are Cara Jansen of Calvin (soccer), Carrie Meyer
of Adrian (soccer) and Marisa Proctor of Alma (diving).
Schultz is a psychology/Spanish major who carries a 3.98 graduate point average on
a four point scale while Timmer is a chemistry/Spanish major with a 3.94 GPA.
Both were NCAA All-Americans last fall as they finished 25th and 29th respectively
at the Division III championships.
Schultz was co-captain of the 1997 cross country team. She is a three-time all-conference
honoree. Last spring she was also All-MIAA in track after winning the conference championship
in the 5,000-meter run. Already this spring she has recorded a provisional qualifying
performance for the Division III national track championship in the 5,000-meter run.
Timmer is a two-time All-MIAA cross county honoree and last spring received all-conference
honors in track.
