The Hope College Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Chamber Ensemble I will perform on Thursday, March 9, in Snow Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m., a modification
of the originally listed time.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The Ensembles will be directed by Steve Talaga,
adjunct professor of music. Talaga is a pianist and
composer who has been performing professionally for more
than 20 years.
Jazz Ensemble I will perform five selections,
including "Rockin' in Rhythm," by Ellington, Mills, &
Carney; and "Birdland," by Joe Zawinul. The ensemble
consists of 12 students: freshman Joseph Bychowski of Carol
Stream, Ill.; sophomore Matt Cook of Delmar, N.Y.; freshman
Jeremy Davis of Egan, Ill.; sophomore Eric DeWitt of
Holland; freshman Kirsten Dickerson of Grand River, Ohio;
freshman Ben Fedak of Menands, N.Y.; junior Hartwell Gary of
Charlottesville, Va.; sophomore Grant Heller of Holland;
junior Doug Mulder of Holland; freshman Jamie Pierce of
South Haven; junior Daron Vroon of Jacksonville, Fla.; and
senior Josh Wheeler of Watervliet.
Jazz Chamber Ensemble I will also perform five
selections, which include Coltrane's "Giant Steps," and
Kenny Barron's "Voyage." The group is comprised of Ben
Fedak (drums), Hartwell Gary (bass), senior Quinn Kelley
(piano) of Barrington, Ill.; and Josh Wheeler (saxophone).
The Nykerk Hall of Music is located between
College and Columbia avenues along the former 12th Street.
