Kim Grotenhuis Named an Academic All-America Candidate
Hope senior Kim Grotenhuis of Hamilton, Mich. is in a familiar position.
She has once again been elected to the academic all-district college division softball team and is now eligible for Verizon Academic All-America consideration.
A volleyball and softball standout at Hope, Grotenhuis finished her college career with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
She has already achieved Verizon Academic All-Academic status in softball (2000 season) and volleyball this past fall. She is the first Hope athlete to receive this national honor in two sports.
This past season she posted a 12-6 record with a school-record 0.90 earned run average. Over her career, she was 47-23 with a 1.44 ERA and school-record 396 strikeouts.
Emily Sowers Honored for Academic Accomplishments
Senior Emily Sowers of Grand Rapids, Mich. (GR Christian HS) has been voted to the Verizon Academic All-District spring at-large second team.
She is among 20 athletes in several spring sports from Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio being honored.
An NCAA All-American in track, Sowers maintained a 3.58 grade point average while majoring in psychology.
She was voted to the All-MIAA track and field team four consecutive years and is seeking to achieve All-America status in the discus for the third time in her career.
In April she was honored by the Midwestern Psychological Association for her undergraduate research work.
The Verizon Academic All-Americans will be announced later this month. The program is coordinated by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
