Get your dancing shoes out, Footloose is coming to town. Hope Summer Repertory Theatre is excited to open its season with this hit musical at 8 p.m. on June 14 at the DeWitt Theatre.
Footloose, which runs from June 14-July 24, was created from the blockbuster movie of the same name. The show features great hit music like "Let's Hear It For The Boy," "Holding Out For A Hero," and of course, "Footloose."
The story of a teenage boy, Ren, who comes to a small town and wants to dance, Footloose shows the excitement of dance as it comes alive for an entire community. In his efforts to create a school dance, Ren comes into conflict with the town's religious and civil authorities. When the minister's daughter begins to fall for the dancing newcomer, conflict erupts. But in the end, the joy of dance brings a small town back together again.
HSRT's version features four equity guest artists, including Christine Ciccone in one of the title roles of Ariel. Josh Franklin (pictured left) takes on the role of Ren. Equity artists Chip DuFord (Joseph, Wizard of Oz), Mart Goetzinger (Orphans) and Dana Snyder (Irma Vep, Rumors) are also in the production.
Hope College theatre faculty member Jean Bahle, a West Michigan favorite, appears as Vi Moore.
Veteran HSRT Director Daina Robins (Cinderella, Turn of the Screw), who also chairs Hope's theatre department, will add her own unique touch to this fun story.
Another Hope faculty member, dance professor John Dayger, handles the choreography for this dancing extravaganza, while Fred Tessler directs the music.
Footloose runs on June 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 24, 26, and 29, as well as July 1, 3, 6, 10, 12, 16, 18, 23, and 24. While at the box office, be sure to reserve tickets for the other great HSRT main stage shows, including the classic farce, Charley's Aunt, the gothic horror story, The Woman In Black, and the delightful family musical, Honk. HSRT's "second stage" show is the one-woman comedy Fully Committed, while we enjoy a return to the movies in the cabaret show, Hooray For Hollywood. The Children's Performance Troupe is presenting Judith Viorst's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and the Grimm's brothers' tale, The Bremen Town Musicians.
