Student teams from Hope College placed second and tied for third in the Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition.
The contest was held on Saturday, April 3, at Kalamazoo College. A total of 19 teams, with two or three members each, participated from nine colleges and universities across lower Michigan.
Albion College won the competition, and Calvin College was third along with Hope. The top five was rounded out by the University of Michigan at Flint.
The finishes continue a series of strong showings in the event for Hope. Teams from the college have won 10 times in the competition's 28-year history, including in both 2002 and 2003.
Hope was represented by 16 students organized into six teams. The members of the college's second-place team were junior Brandon Alleman of Morrice, senior Henry Gould of Zeeland and senior Andrew Wells of Midland, while the students on the third-place team were junior Daniela Banu of Bucharest, Romania, senior Stefan Coltisor of Bucharest, Romania, and senior Heidi Libner of Park Ridge, Ill.
The other participating Hope students were: junior Ben Bradley of Taylors Falls, Minn.; senior Michael Cortez of Cadillac; junior Brandon Hazen of St. Paul, Minn.; junior Natalie Hoogeveen of Orange City, Iowa; junior Brad Houzenga of Fulton, Ill.; junior Jennifer Kasten of Portage; sophomore Shova KC of Kathmandu, Nepal; junior Utsab Khadka of Kathmandu, Nepal; 2004 graduate Luke Olinyk of Chelsea; and junior Jennica Skoug of Portage.
The colleges and universities that fielded teams were: Albion College, Aquinas College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Lawrence Tech University, Olivet College, Saginaw Valley State University and the University of Michigan at Flint.
