The Dave Liebman Big Band will perform at Hope College on Friday, April 13, at 9 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.

Acclaimed jazz artist Liebman stretches the big band beyond the tradition of swing. The "New York Times" has said of him, "While others of his '60s generation have fallen off their ambition, Liebman has remained dogged about composition and trying difficult styles...he's a fighter."

Over the past several decades, Liebman has often been featured with top European musicians such as Joachim Kuhn, Daniel Humair, Paolo Fresu, Jon Christensen and Bobo Stenson, and in the World View Trio with Austrian drummer Wolfgang Reisenger and French bassist Jean-Paul Celea.

Liebman spent the years 1970-74 performing with Miles Davis, and then went on to work with other artists such as Chick Corea and John Schofield.

As of the present, David Liebman has been featured on nearly 300 recordings, of which he has been the leader and/or co-leader on nearly 100, and has recorded well over 200 original compositions. His artistic output has ranged from straight-ahead classic jazz to chamber music; from fusion to avant garde.

Liebman has published material on a variety of subjects, instructional DVDs and chamber music, and over the years has contributed regularly to various periodicals such as the "Saxophone Journal" and the "International Association of Jazz Educators Journal." He is the author of several milestone books, including "Self Portrait of A Jazz Artist," and "A Chromatic Approach To Jazz Harmony And Melody."

Tickets for the performance are $12 for regular admission, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for Hope College students and children 18 and under, and are on sale at the ticket office in the DeVos Fieldhouse. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at (616) 395-7890.
