The department of music at Hope College will sponsor a faculty recital featuring Gabe Southard on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.

Southard, flute, will be joined by Sarah Southard, oboe; Adam Clark, piano and harpsichord; and Andrew Le, piano.

The program will include "Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano," by Madeline Dring; "Sonata in D Major," by Sergei Prokofiev; "Sonata in b minor," by Johann Sebastian Bach; and "Carmen Fantasy," by Francois Bourne.

Southard is currently in his second year of teaching at HopeCollege, where he conducts the Wind Symphony and Anchor Band, in addition to leading the instrumental division of the music education program. Southard completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in conducting at Michigan State University, where he worked with Professor John Whitwell.  Prior to his residence at MSU, he served as Wind Symphony conductor and flute studio teacher at the University of Michigan-Flint, where he also taught orchestration, music appreciation and advanced conducting.

As a flute player, Southard maintains an active performing schedule by giving recitals and playing in chamber ensembles.  He has also performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra; the Lucca, Italy Opera Orchestra; and a number of community orchestras.

Nykerk Hall of Music is located in the central Hope campus at the former 127 E. 12th Street between College and Columbia avenues.
