HOLLAND -- Awards as the outstanding senior athletes among Hope College graduates in the class of 2010 were presented to two students during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday (April 29).
HOLLAND -- Awards as the outstanding senior athletes among Hope College graduates in the class of 2010 were presented to two students during the college's Honors Convocation on Thursday (April 29).
Philana Greene of Grandville (Grandville HS) was presented the John Schouten award while Phil Heyboer of Zeeland (Holland Christian HS) received the Otto van der Velde All-Campus Award.
The Schouten award is given to a senior woman who, in addition to excelling in athletics, possesses other strong character traits and leadership abilities. The award is named in memory of John "Jack" Schouten who was a long-time physical educator and coach at Hope, in addition to serving as the college's first director of athletics.
The van der Velde award is presented to a senior man for outstanding contributions to the college in athletics, scholarship and participation in student activities. The award, presented annually since 1932, is named in memory of Dr. Otto van der Velde, a 1915 Hope College graduate who lettered in four sports and was later the college's team physician for more than 40 years.
° A communication major with a minor in psychology, Philana Greene was a four-year letterwinner on Hope's successful women's basketball team. She was co-captain of the Flying Dutch as both a junior and senior and over her four seasons played on teams that compiled a cumulative 114-9 record and played in the NCAA tournament every year. This past season she was chosen the defensive player of the year in the MIAA. A graduate of Grandville High School, she is the daughter of Phillip and Vanessa Greene of Grandville.
° A psychology major, Phil Heyboer was an NCAA All-American swimmer who achieved All-MIAA honors four consecutive years. Co-captain of this year's team, he finished sixth at the NCAA Division III championships in the 400 individual medley. Over his career he was an NCAA All-American three times. He established three Hope and one conference record. A graduate of Holland Christian High School, he is the son of Larry and Kristi Heyboer of Zeeland.
