Arabic poetry will be the focus of a lecture presented at HopeCollege on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Dr. Majd Al-Mallah of Grand Valley State University will present "Tamim b. al-Mu'izz and the Formation of Fatimid Poetics:  Praising al-Aziz, Contesting Ibn al-Mu'tazz" on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 3:30 p.m. in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

Majd Al-Mallah is director of the Middle East Studies Program at Grand Valley State University.  He has a doctorate in Arabic and comparative literature from Indiana University.

The lecture is being presented in conjunction with the college's participation in global International Education Week (IEW).  The week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, part of the departments' efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.  First held in 2000, today IEW is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.  More information about IEW is available online at www.iew.state.gov.

International Education Week at Hope is featuring the theme "The Arab World - Language, Literature and Culture."  Information about additional activities will be shared online at www.hope.edu/admin/international.

The week at Hope will culminate in the annual "IMAGES: A Celebration of Cultures" program on Saturday, Nov. 20, which will include a dinner in Phelps Hall starting at 4:30 p.m. and an international showcase in the Knickerbocker Theatre at 7 p.m.  Admission to the Nov. 20 dinner is $5, payable at the door.  Admission to the international showcase is free.
