The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will conclude its 2010-11 season with an address on hip injuries in athletics by Dr. Carl Wierks on Monday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Wierks is an orthopaedic surgeon with HollandBone & JointCenter, and specializes in sports medicine and hip arthroscopy. His talk will discuss many of the common pathologies that present in athletes and will focus on the emerging topic of hip impingement, and will also review surgical and non-surgical treatments.
Wierks completed a fellowship at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., working with specialists in both the knee and hip arthroscopy. He previously completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
He has had articles in seven peer-reviewed journals and nine published textbook chapters. His research has been accepted for presentation at several orthopaedic meetings, including the annual American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting. He received the Maryland Orthopaedic Association Resident Research Award in 2007, and the Loyola Surgical Grand Rounds Research Award in 2002.
Wierks is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Christian Medical Association. He has participated in philanthropic medical trips to Zambia, Africa; Cuenca, Ecuador and Manta, Ecuador.
He graduated from Wheaton College in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology. He completed his M.D. at Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine in 2004.
The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan, Shoreline Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Clinic, Holland Hospital Rehabilitation Services, The Bone and Joint Center, and the college.
