Dr. Todd Steen of the Hope College economics faculty is among the co-editors of a book celebrating the 40th anniversary of the quarterly journal "Christian Scholar's Review."
"Taking Every Thought Captive: Forty Years of the Christian Scholar's Review" features 25 essays, selected by the members of the editing team, from across the journal's history from its inception in 1970 through 2010. The book is being published this month by Abilene Christian University Press of Abilene, Texas.
The essays are divided into two sections: the first focused on general discussion of Christian higher education and the academic vocation, and the second reflecting on specific academic disciplines. Among the authors are scholars who through the years have spoken at Hope, such as Stanley Hauerwas, Richard Mouw and Nicholas Wolterstorff. The featured essayists include Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger of the Hope faculty, who with Brian Walsh co-authored "Education for Homelessness or Homemaking?"
Steen and the other editors reviewed the approximately 650 essays published by the journal since it began. Steen is pleased with the resulting mix, and was impressed by how well essays published even early in the review's history continue to be relevant.
"We looked through every essay that was published over 40 years," said Steen, who is the Granger Professor of Economics at Hope. "That took quite a bit of time, but it was fun."
"We feel like the essays that we picked from 40 years ago are very apropos now," he said. "It's a great collection, I think."
The book is edited by Don W. King of Montreat College, who is also the review's editor. In addition to Steen, the co-editors are Perry L. Glanzer of Baylor University, who is one of the review's book review editors; David A. Hoekema of CalvinCollege, who is also the review's publisher; Jerry A. Pattengale of IndianaWesleyanUniversity, who is the review's associate publisher; and Todd C. Ream of Indiana Wesleyan University, who is one of the review's book review editors.
The peer-reviewed "Christian Scholars Review" features articles of original scholarship and general interest dealing with all aspects of Christian thought and the interrelationship of Christian thought with all areas of scholarly interest, and also seeks to provide a forum for the discussion of the theoretical issues of Christian higher education. The interdisciplinary academic journal has a circulation of approximately 7,500.
Hope is one of 47 colleges and universities nationwide that serve as sponsors of the "Christian Scholar's Review." Steen, a member of the Hope faculty since 1988, has served on the journal's editorial staff since 1993, first as circulation editor and since 1995 as managing editor, responsible for coordinating the printing and distribution, managing the website, and other business-related and technical aspects of the publication.
"I've had a chance to meet with a lot of people working with it, and Hope College has been very supportive of my work with 'Christian Scholars Review,'" Steen said. "I see it as a sense of calling to work with the journal."
